Deciding you're going to start an online business is all fine and dandy until you realize: I actually have no idea where to even begin. And just like that? A lovely existential crisis emerges, one that kills every ounce of your mojo. Welcome to entrepreneurship!
There will always be friction when we try to take our ideas and turn them into reality. They've lived so peacefully in our minds over the years. But it's not our job to know how they will manifest. It's our job to protect and nurture them until they are mature enough to thrive on their own. And in the early stages? They will be imperfect—a far cry from the level of perfection we have created with the whims of our imagination.
- Ira Glass
"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it's like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you're making stuff, what you're making isn't so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you're making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.
Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn't as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that. And if you are just starting out or if you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you're going to finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you're going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you're making will be as good as your ambitions."
For many years, I was a perfectionist mapping out my entire life.
What I didn't know is that my ambition would always outpace my speed of execution. As soon as I had my ducks in a perfect row, my dreams would grow bigger. It's when you finally realize that your dreams will always be far ahead of you, pulling you towards them, that you finally start running towards them like a giddy lunatic.
Forget trying to change the world. Focus more on building the discipline to show up every single day. That's it. That's the secret. Show your ideas they can trust you.
You want to use your voice, but the patriarchy keeps reminding you to doubt your ideas and stay small instead.
You know you've outgrown your current work, but you're still trying to convince yourself to "be grateful for what you have".
You have big aspirations and want to release your creativity, but don't know how that fits in with your current life.
